Male Tummy Tuck Dr. Joseph Racanelli

A male tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a body contouring procedure that removes excess abdominal skin for a more athletic, muscular-looking midsection. Over time, it is common to notice changes in your skin–especially if you recently experienced weight loss. With a tummy tuck, we can help you achieve a more sculpted midsection as well as muscle repair. Tummy tucks have helped thousands of patients improve their quality of life; in 2023, specialists performed the procedure more than 170,000 (1) times to help patients improve their appearance.

Dr. Joseph Racanelli is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has helped many patients sculpt their midsections and restore confidence in their appearance.

About Male Tummy Tucks

Removing excess skin with a tummy tuck can improve your confidence and provide results that last for many years. Droopy abdominal skin can affect your body proportions and the way your clothing fits. (2) Patients who have undergone weight loss may see a more significant amount of loose skin around the abdomen, which can obscure weight loss results and muscle definition.

Dr. Racanelli can create a personalized plan based on your goals to sculpt a more defined abdomen. He can also perform an extended tummy tuck to remove a more significant amount of excess skin.

Male Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

If you have pockets of stubborn fat that are not responding to diet and exercise in addition to bothersome loose skin, Dr. Racanelli can perform liposuction during your procedure to shape them. Liposuction is a procedure that removes targeted fat cells with gentle suction while preserving the surrounding tissue. Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction is one of the most effective ways to highlight your muscle definition for a more athletic, muscular-looking abdomen.

Benefits of a Male Tummy Tuck

A male tummy tuck provides several benefits that make the procedure an ideal option for patients who would like to sculpt their midsection:

  • Improved mobility: Removing excess abdominal skin can make exercising easier.
  • Increased self-confidence: Many men feel more confident with a more athletic-looking midsection.
  • Long-lasting results: You can maintain your results for several years if you take good care of your body.
  • Improved abdominal strength: Dr. Racanelli can tighten the abdominal muscles to enhance your core strength if they separated during weight gain– a condition called diastasis recti (3)
  • Improved muscle definition: Highlighting your muscle definition by removing excess skin can provide a more muscular, sculpted look.
  • Natural-looking results: The discreet incision along the underwear line allows for a natural appearance.
  • Customizable treatment: Dr. Racanelli will design a personalized treatment plan based on your underlying anatomy and goals.

Candidates

Male Tummy Tuck Dr. Joseph Racanelli

If you are a nonsmoker–or are willing to quit–in good overall health who takes good care of your body, you are likely a good candidate for the procedure. Many candidates have recently undergone significant weight changes, struggle with excess abdominal skin, and are committed to maintaining a stable weight. However, if you have a condition that could affect your ability to heal, Dr. Racanelli may suggest an alternative procedure.

Personal Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Racanelli will ask about your medical history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals to create a personalized treatment plan. Many men combine a tummy tuck with liposuction to highlight their muscle definition, and Dr. Racanelli can adjust your treatment plan for your specific needs.

Preparation

To prepare for a male tummy tuck, Dr. Racanelli will likely recommend that you:

  • Stop taking medications and supplements that thin the blood
  • Refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after your procedure
  • Ask a trusted individual to drive you home after the procedure
  • Prepare your meals ahead of time
  • Arrange time off work so you can focus on your recovery

Procedure

On the day of your procedure, we recommend that you arrive in comfortable clothing with clean skin–do not apply lotion or body products on the day of your procedure. Dr. Racanelli will mark your skin for surgery and make an incision along your underwear line to remove excess tissue from the abdomen. At the end of the procedure, Dr. Racanelli will close the incision with sutures.

Recovery

After the procedure, you can return home to rest after a monitoring period. Most patients need around 2 weeks of downtime before they return to most of their normal activities. We can provide more specific instructions about when you can return to work based on the physical demands of your job. After 6-8 weeks, you can gradually return to light exercise, and Dr. Racanelli will let you know when you can resume your normal exercise routine.

Results

After a tummy tuck, you can enjoy a more sculpted, athletic-looking midsection. Removing excess skin also balances your proportions and provides a more defined body contour. If you maintain a stable weight and take good care of your body by exercising regularly and eating healthily, you can enjoy long-lasting results for years to come. It is important to keep in mind that, if significant weight fluctuations were to occur, the results of your abdominoplasty could be affected.

Body Contouring After Massive Weight Loss

If you recently experienced weight changes, the abdomen may not be the only area you witness excess pockets of skin that affect your body proportions. For patients who are looking for a more comprehensive treatment, we offer several other body contouring treatments. These procedures are specifically designed to sculpt the body to achieve a more athletic-looking physique after weight loss.

Arm Lift

An arm lift removes hanging skin from the arms. After weight loss, you may find that you have these “bat wings” that can affect your self-esteem and body proportions. With a discreet incision along the underside of the arm, Dr. Racanelli can remove this excess tissue for a more toned arm appearance.

Facelift

Since weight loss affects the entire body, many patients experience droopy facial skin– a condition colloquially known as “Ozempic face” after medically-assisted weight loss. With a facelift, Dr. Racanelli can help you achieve a more youthful complexion by removing the excess skin. He makes a thin incision behind the ears and along the hairline to tighten the skin.

FAQ

Can I lose weight with a male tummy tuck?

A male tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution. We recommend that patients complete their weight loss journey before considering a body contouring procedure. Patients should be at a stable weight at the time of their procedure. For eligible candidates, we can remove excess skin and perform muscle repair. If you would like to lose weight, we can discuss your goals during your consultation.

Will I have scars after a male tummy tuck?

We take care to make a thin incision along your underwear line that creates a discreet scar that is hardly noticeable and easily concealed beneath clothing. Treatments also exist to help lessen the appearance of scarring after healing is complete. If you have additional questions about scarring, we can discuss them during your consultation.

After a male tummy tuck, when can I return to work?

Depending on the physical demands of your job, most patients can return to work after about 2 weeks.

How long will the results of a male tummy tuck last?

If you take good care of your body to prevent weight fluctuations that could affect your results, you can enjoy results for many years to come.
