About Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers are a type of treatment that can help restore lost volume and enhance the appearance of the face through the use of a specially designed serum. Dermal fillers have many purposes but are often used to fill in fine lines and wrinkles and reverse visible signs of aging. Fillers are often measured in syringes or cubic centimeters (cc), with the product most commonly being provided in 1 cc syringes. (2)

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that can naturally be found in the body. (3) Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are some of the most popular fillers available. These fillers are biodegradable, often lasting between 6-12 months before being naturally absorbed into the body. These fillers can also be dissolved if the patient wants to reverse their results. Hyaluronic acid fillers are often graded on viscosity, being referred to as “G” or “G-prime.” The higher the G, the more rigid the filler consistency is, with lower G products having a softer consistency. (2) Hyaluronic acid works by binding to water to plump the areas that appear hollow or need rejuvenation.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) fillers are a type of dermal filler that helps restore lost volume in the skin and stimulates the production of collagen. These fillers are long-lasting but non-permanent, offering more structure compared to other types of fillers on the market. CaHA fillers can become more effective with repeated treatments, helping stimulate collagen production in the body and leading to an increase in overall skin quality.

Benefits

There are many benefits to receiving dermal fillers, with treatment being customized to target each individual’s concerns. These injections are minimally invasive and non-surgical, offering significant improvements for patients who may not be interested in or have time for a lengthy recovery. There is no visual scarring or downtime, allowing patients to return to work and most aspects of their routine immediately following their treatment. Certain injectable fillers are also able to stimulate the production of collagen, leading to an increase in skin quality and tone.

Candidates

Candidates interested in injectable fillers are those interested in reversing early signs of aging and restoring a more youthful appearance to the face without necessarily needing a surgical procedure. If you are interested in reducing the appearance of furrowed brow lines, wrinkles, fine lines, sunken cheeks, and other facial creases without lengthy or extensive downtime, you may be an ideal candidate for this treatment.

All candidates interested in injectables should be in good overall health, free of any underlying medical conditions. Patients who are currently experiencing skin infections or have a lidocaine allergy are not recommended to undergo these kinds of treatments.

Consultation

Before starting any injection treatment, patients are asked to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Racanelli. This is so that he can help find the best strategies and techniques to help each patient achieve their ideal result. At each consultation, Dr. Racanelli will perform a comprehensive medical evaluation. This includes a discussion regarding each patient’s medical history alongside an examination of the treatment site. After a treatment plan has been established, preparation and recovery instructions will be provided to each patient alongside the total cost of the procedure.

Preparation

Before each injection appointment, Dr. Racanelli ensures each patient receives a set of instructions on how to prepare their skin. For the most ideal results, patients are recommended to follow all instructions given by our expert team members.

It is recommended to avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before and after their treatment to help minimize any potential swelling. Patients should also refrain from the use of harsh skincare products such as retinol, face peels, and other exfoliants, as well as any medications or supplements that possess blood-thinning properties. On the day of the treatment, please arrive with a clean face, free of any makeup and skincare

Procedure

On the day of the treatment, patients may or may not receive a topical or local anesthetic, depending on the type of filler being used. Certain fillers contain a substance called lidocaine, a local anesthetic often incorporated into the filler to minimize discomfort. (4) The duration of each session can vary, typically falling between 15-60 minutes, depending on the type of filler, the amount of injections needed, and the methodology used. Dr. Racanelli will choose injection methods and patterns based on each patient’s individual anatomy and ideal results, as there are multiple ways filler can be injected to help eliminate visible signs of aging, restoring a more youthful appearance. (5)

Linear Threading

Linear threading, also known as tunneling, is a type of injection technique commonly used to correct isolated folds or lines, especially in the nasolabial region or around the lips. (5) This technique consists of inserting the needle along the length of a fold or crease and gradually depositing threads of filler while withdrawing the needle from the injection site.

Crosshatching

Crosshatching is an injection technique similar to the linear threading technique that is often used to correct marionette lines, restore volume between the chin and jowls, and target larger treatment areas overall. (6) The injector will deposit several parallel lines of filler into the target treatment area. They will then inject a second set of parallel lines, with these running perpendicular to the first set, creating a grid-like pattern.

Radial Fanning

Radial Fanning is a technique used primarily in the cheeks, cheekbones, and mid-face, but it can also be used in the nasolabial folds. (5, 6) This procedure utilizes techniques similar to the tunneling technique, with multiple threads of filler being injected in this manner. Before the needle is completely withdrawn, it is reinserted into a radial pattern before another thread of filler is deposited. This technique can be repeated multiple times until the patient’s ideal contour has been achieved.

Serial Puncture

The serial puncture technique is used to deliver filler between and around the eyebrows, above the nose, and to smaller creases or fine lines on the face. This technique consists of injecting multiple aliquots very close together along a fold or wrinkle to create a natural, cohesive appearance.

Recovery and Results

After injection, patients may experience minor swelling and redness in the treatment area with effects naturally subsiding on their own within the following few days. As this procedure has no downtime, patients will be free to return to their daily routine immediately. Patients should also avoid any physical activity and other strenuous tasks for the following 24 hours. Any additional or personalized recovery instructions will be provided for each patient at their personal consultation.

Some patients may be able to see significant results immediately. Certain types of fillers, such as HA fillers, are known to offer full, immediate results, while other fillers offer gradual results, such as CaHA injections. This means that even though there may be a noticeable change, the full effects of this treatment will continue to develop over a period as the collagen levels in the body continue to increase

The results of the treatment are long-lasting, with the results lasting between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler and lifestyle choices.
