Liposuction, Dr. Joseph Racanelli, New Jersey

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a body-sculpting procedure in which stubborn pockets of fat are removed with medical suction. It is one of the most popular aesthetic surgical procedures among patients, (1) and can help them achieve slimmer contours safely and effectively.

Sometimes, people experience a roadblock on their weight loss journey due to genetics or other factors; some fat deposits are just more resistant to the effects of exercise and healthy food choices. Liposuction contours the curves of the body by removing fat that has not been significantly affected by traditional, non-surgical methods. (2)

Dr. Joseph Racanelli is a top-rated plastic surgeon based in New Jersey and New York with a wealth of experience performing liposuction procedures. He has perfected his technique with customized equipment, such as smaller liposuction cannulas. Dr. Racanelli’s precise techniques can help remove and smooth out the appearance of excess fat that remains stored in target areas of your body.

Dr. Racanelli also employs VASER (vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance) for high-definition liposculpting. This advanced technique enhances the process, unveiling muscle tone and curves. By utilizing VASER energy to emulsify fat prior to liposuction, Dr. Racanelli ensures a safer and more precise procedure.

About Liposuction with Dr. Racanelli

Optimized Techniques

Most surgeons use standard surgical cannulas to remove the fat during a liposuction procedure. Dr. Racanelli has optimized this technique by using custom-made cannulas that are much smaller and thinner than the traditional cannulas. These smaller cannulas in turn result in fewer lumps and bumps, smaller surgical scars, and a smoother contour.

VASER Energy

VASER liposuction utilizes small probes that deliver pulses of sound wave energy. This energy targets and disrupts the fat deposits in a precise way. During the VASER procedure, tumescent fluid, an anesthetic solution, will be incorporated into the fat, causing it to swell. The sound waves from the small probes will then loosen and break down the fat cells in the swelled fatty areas. VASER liposuction melts the fat and limits blood loss. (3)

VASER energy can be used alongside other liposuction techniques. Dr. Racanelli will help you decide during your consultation which procedures will be most beneficial to you.

Benefits of Liposuction

  • Precision: VASER liposuction utilizes ultrasound technology to precisely target and emulsify unwanted fat cells, resulting in improved precision, enhanced sculpting, and smoother contours.
  • Minimally Invasive Procedure: Compared to traditional liposuction, VASER liposuction involves smaller incisions and requires less downtime, allowing for a quicker recovery period.
  • Localized Fat Reduction: Liposuction effectively removes stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body, helping patients attain their desired body shape and proportions.
  • Improved Body Shape: Liposuction is an excellent option for those seeking aesthetic enhancement. It can help achieve a more defined jawline, slimmer waistline, or a better-contoured abdomen, among other body areas.
  • Smooth Results: VASER liposuction provides smooth and natural-looking results due to its ability to differentiate between fat and surrounding tissues, minimizing potential damage during removal.
  • Reduced Recovery Time: While individual recovery experiences may vary, VASER liposuction generally offers reduced recovery time compared to traditional liposuction methods. Patients often return to normal activities sooner.
  • Increased Self-Confidence: By improving body contours and enhancing overall appearance, liposuction has the potential to boost patients’ self-confidence and improve their quality of life.

Preparation

Liposuction, Dr. Joseph Racanelli, New Jersey

Before your liposuction procedure, Dr. Racanelli will utilize preoperative photographs to help him plan for your specific treatment. This will give both you and Dr. Racanelli the ability to envision realistic results. (1) He will also make temporary markings to indicate what areas of fat he will be removing.

In preparation for your procedure, we will also let you know what medications and supplements you should stop taking before your procedure, such as those with blood-thinning properties. You should also prepare to take at least a few days off of work after your procedure, and also arrange for a trusted individual to drive you home from your appointment.

Procedure

It is important to keep in mind that all liposuction procedures will look a little different because of the ways different bodies store fat. Nevertheless, the procedure will begin by Dr. Racanelli making a small incision and inserting the VASER probe. The probe will emit ultrasonic energy to emulsify fat cells while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues. Following emulsification, Dr. Racanelli uses specially designed custom made cannulas to gently suction out the unwanted fat cells from the treatment area. The intricate technique allows for precise sculpting and contouring. Timing for the entire process varies depending on your individual needs and requests, ranging from 1-6 hours.

Recovery

Dr. Racanelli will give you specific guidelines to follow during the recovery process after your liposuction procedure. In these guidelines, we will let you know which medications to take and which to refrain from taking. All recoveries will look a little different because of the amounts of fat that may be removed. After your procedure, you will be given compression garments and bandages that will assist your body in the healing process. These compression garments are typically worn for around 2 months. (2)

Although there will be some swelling, you can expect it to resolve over the course of a few months. Full recovery time for liposuction can also vary from person to person. You may be able to return to less strenuous activities after just a few days, but it could be about 6 weeks until you can resume normal exercise. (2)

Results

After your procedure, you will notice less bulging almost immediately. Whether you’ve chosen to focus on your arms, abdomen, buttocks, back, thighs, or all of the above, your liposuction treatment will give you a more contoured appearance. When your recovery is fully complete, we recommend resuming exercise and a healthy diet to help preserve your results for years to come.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Tummy Tuck

Unlike liposuction, which will remove fat from underneath the skin, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) will mainly address the loose skin that occurs after pregnancy or significant weight loss, and tightens the muscles that separate during pregnancy (rectus diastasis). Dr. Racanelli always performs high definition liposuction in conjunction with every tummy tuck. By getting rid of excess skin, a tummy tuck can make for a firmer, smoother midsection.

Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, can use the fat suctioned out during liposuction and transfer it into the buttocks for an enhanced, rounder shape. Excess fat can be taken from the abdomen, waist, or thighs for this procedure. If you are interested in addressing multiple areas of the body at once, a BBL might be right for you.

Arm Lift

The arms are another place of the body that can be affected by loose, hanging skin as a result of significant weight loss or aging. For more youthful, toned arms, you can speak to Dr. Racanelli about an arm lift procedure. During an arm lift (brachioplasty), Dr. Racanelli will tighten loose skin with minimal scarring, while also utilizing liposuction to remove stubborn arm fat.

FAQ

How much weight will I lose with liposuction?

It is crucial to have a clear understanding that liposuction is not a surgical procedure designed for weight loss. Instead, liposuction is a targeted approach to address specific areas where fat accumulates due to genetic predisposition or resistant fat pockets that persist despite efforts in diet and exercise. The technique is particularly effective for genetically predetermined fat storage areas that may vary from person to person. It is our goal to ensure that individuals considering liposuction have realistic expectations and a comprehensive understanding of the procedure’s intended outcomes.

How much fat will liposuction remove?

The extent of fat removed through liposuction is highly individualized and depends on the patient’s current fat distribution in the specific body area undergoing treatment. Liposuction is designed to target fat located beneath the skin, as opposed to fat found in and around the organs. Liposuction is not intended for comprehensive weight loss or the reduction of internal organ fat. The amount of fat removed is also contingent upon the patient’s unique anatomy and the volume of fat present in the targeted area. At Dr. Racanelli’s practices, we strive to provide personalized and realistic expectations for individuals considering liposuction.

After liposuction, will the fat grow back?

Liposuction delivers permanent results by removing fat cells from the treated area. Subsequent weight gain typically manifests in areas where liposuction was not performed initially, preserving the sculpted appearance achieved through the procedure. To sustain and optimize liposuction results, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, is essential. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for individuals undergoing liposuction to manage expectations and make informed choices about post-procedure care.
